Agnieszka Latawiec

Dr Agnieszka Latawiec is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Biosystems Engineering at the Opole University of Technology in Poland. She is also a co-founder of the International Institute for Sustainability in Rio de Janeiro and she currently holds the position of a Research Director at the Institute. She holds BSc in Environmental Engineering and MSc in Environmental Protection, with specialization in soil and plant chemistry. She completed her PhD in Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia where she is currently a Research Associate. Her PhD, financed by the Zuckermann Fund, focused on accessing bioaccessibility of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons using subcritical water extraction from contaminated soils and sediments. Being always interested in social aspects of land management she also performed during her PhD a survey with contaminated land officers of England and Wales to investigate incorporation of bioaccessibility into decision making for contaminated land. Over the last years she focused on broader aspects of land management and led or participated in a number of projects related to land-use change and modelling.

She participated in designing the first discipline of Sustainability Science at the Pontific University of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil and she is interested in a range of topics related to sustainability. She is currently co-editing a book on “Sustainability Indicators in Practice”. She seeks collaborative interdisciplinary research in a range of topics including soil science, land management, environmental decision-making, land-use change, impact assessments, sustainability science and indicators.
